About our Data

We collect data from multiple sources. Ranging from industry leaders to our own crawlers. Our data sources typically come from NGOs or government agencies that aggregate data from researchers. The benefit of this, is that it is a governmental mandate to make this data available so that companies can assess and report their own impact.
Our approach uses data from the best in industry LCA data sources. No one covers the data of consumer products the way we do, and the automation we enable is unmatched.

Our methodology for calculations is scientific, double-verified, and research based. We tend to use data that is industry standard and scientifically backed, and we check it against other data sources to assess the validity of that data.

It will always be our objective to be as transparent and open as possible – no greenwashing here! The measurement technologies and the availability of our data is always improving and any source that we use goes through an extensive process of consideration before it is added to our database. In the event that faulty or misleading data is used we would first stop any services that are using that data, and send out a release explaining why one, we originally considered this data, and two, why it has been proven to be faulty or misleading.

Data security is no joke. As of January 2022 our data engine does not collect any personal data that can be tied to an individual. The data we collect is specific to the product –like the material used to make a pair of jeans or the waste generated along the way– or brand or manufactured that is being assessed.

The data sources we use issue new releases on their schedule. Once a new release is available we pull that data into our system and update any of the old data. The ability to measure the impact of these products is becoming more of a focus and so the data collection and techniques to capture impact are improving. Because of this, some of our data sources, like brand level data, are updated daily.

Since products, and the underlying impact data does not change regularly, we are able to calculate the impact of a product when it comes in, update it when the underlying data changes, or the product data is updated and keep the caches of it’s impact for a relatively long time. We also add more data sources regularly ensuring we stay ahead of the curve.

We sure do! We have come a long way since our humble start-up beginnings (re: in a basement) and are honoured to be recognized as leaders and innovators. Here are some examples:

Measuring Your Products

Currently, we measure the CO2 emitted from all of the processes that lead up to making the material itself. Essentially we measure everything from the farm to the final step before actually manufacturing the final product. If we use a t-shirt as an example, we would be able to see the CO2 from the farm to the end material that is ready to cut and sew. All of the steps in between are also measured and the processes of converting raw cotton into the final cotton material are all measured.

Our software measures the impact at each step along the way. We are able to show a breakdown of each datapoint. For example, for the apparel industry, rather than just looking at the impact of a specific material, we are able to look at what material certifications a product has, where the product was manufactured, and what specific processes the material went through (knitting vs weaving) in order to increase the accuracy of the information.
